Dreadlocks are such a popular long hairstyle for men, especially those with natural hair. If you get tired of always having your dreadlocks down, keep them out of your face by doing a simple ponytail. Not only is it practical, but the look will also be a lot more interesting with the addition of the dreadlocks as opposed to hair that’s brushed back normally. For long hairstyles, you can get away with visiting your barber only once every 3 to 6 months.

Medium Comb Over and Low Taper Fade

The modern look foregoes the standard shiny gelled spikes for something that is subtle, but still offers some texture. A matte product makes it easy to spike your hair and hold it in place all day, and the skin fade makes it stand out. You can still grow hair long if you have fine, straight hair. Mills adds that this is a style that works for any length of hair once it’s past the shoulders, and suits all hair types from fine to thick.

If you've got natural hair and don't want to go for an afro, then consider rocking a protective style like dreadlocks. To keep this style looking fresh, wash with a clarifying shampoo like Malin + Goetz's Peppermint Shampoo ($22). Even if you’re actively growing out your hair, James suggests, regularly scheduled trims every six to eight weeks will ensure the ends do not split or fray.

High and Tight: 10 Ways to Wear Your Short Fade

Not all mohawks are a foot tall, colorful, and gelled into sharp points, and this amazing mohawk fade is the perfect example. Hair in the center stands straight up to form something resembling tousled spikes while the close-cropped fade and short beard adds another dimension of interest. The textured crop, also known as the French crop, is an awesome way to introduce some fringe into your style. In this photo, the textured style stands out even more with the addition of some blond highlights, and the edge up adds another layer of personality. Style this one by adding wax or pomade, then twisting sections of hair at the ends with your fingers.

First, Asian guys tend to have thick locks that grow quickly and flow in the right direction. Secondly, Asian hair is often straight, which makes it perfect for a longer hairstyle. Thirdly, there is a rich cultural history with Japanese men embracing the top knot styled by the Samurai. As such, letting your hair grow is a seamless transition and will instantly upgrade your style.

To apply hair oil, rub a few drops in between the palms and work through hair from above the ears down, concentrating on the ends. An extreme side part that goes straight back from one tample can boost volume for straight hair but may look unbalanced for textured hair with a lot of volume. You can see how this shorter cut brings out curl while creating that class shaggy shape with bangs.

A good moisturizing conditioner and hair cream is all you need to define and enhance your curls while reducing frizz. If you’re a fan of the punk or skater culture, this haircut will undoubtedly appeal to you. The classic undercut is the base of the style, but it’s the flowing bleached-blond pieces that make this cut stand apart from all the rest.

The tapered sides and faux part trimmed into the side make it even more interesting. When paired with a clean-shaven face, it’s youthful, fun and striking. This faux hawk is more classic than others, but it still foregoes the sharp, shiny spikes for something slightly more textured and natural. The buzzed sides truly set the style off, making it easy to do at home with some high-hold matte wax and a natural-bristle brush. You can use your fingertips to style the spiky texture on top.

These recommendations all address dandruff because it’s a common problem, especially over winter, that is more noticeable with long hair. Also, combatting the scalp fungus that causes itch and dandruff can help hair growth. With longer hair on top and shorter sides, it’s easy to pull hair back. This version is close to the center but a side part can also be worn further over. A cool haircut that is beyond medium length and on its way to growing out much longer. Each inch of length is two months old so the tips of six-inch-long hair are a year old.

This rugged yet refined hairstyle is a nod to historic Viking braids, exuding a sense of adventure and strength. The braided sides offer a practical solution for managing long hair while the loose waves on top add a modern twist. Express your bold and adventurous personality with this long men’s hairstyle.

Instead, opt for styles that create some volume at the sides of the head to balance out proportions. Booboo Stewart's stylish look has an element of edginess thanks to soft layers around the face. Try styling with a straightening balm or serum for a "cleaner" finish or opt for a texture spray or curl cream to bring out any curl or wave. Avan Jogia offers a prime example of a mid-length cut that's long enough to be trendy but still manages to be a classic look. "This style has all hair at about six to eight inches long in length and is perfect for men with a slight wave," says Vaccaro. Use a pomade, wax, or paste to help piece out layers, creating definition and dimension.

However, the way you have your long hair styled defines whether it goes against or with the dress code rules. So, if you want to flaunt long hairstyles for men to work, you are free to do so. Some basic long hairstyles can get a complete facelift by just introducing highlights. The right highlights can get you the tanned (totally Insta-worthy) vacay look without going anywhere! Braided buns are an easy way to maintain the braids and give you a neat look. This is one hairdo that shows off your hair length and highlights your face contours.

When done right, long straight hair men could complete a sleek look. The focus here is only on the length which makes it important to keep the ends trimmed and frizz-free. Unlike many predictions, a man bun has not gone into oblivion, keeping its leading position among the trendiest man’s hairstyles. On the contrary, it has evolved into many other rockabilly forms.

We’ve rounded some of the most popular long hairstyles for men, with an extended gallery at the bottom of the page. Apply a mist of sea-salt spray to damp hair and either blow dry or allow it to air out naturally. Finish with a paste worked through with your fingers and remember that when it comes to styling products, less is always more.

You can incorporate more texture by layering the top hair that remains or not washing it for a day or two. The longer the hair, the more curl it shows off, and the beauty of natural curls is that they’re inconsistent. Showcasing the different textures in your hair is what makes this look seem cool and completely effortless. It also depends on length, so be patient and let your hair grow as long as you dare. And then give it a spritz of salt spray to help define the texture. Medium-length hair doesn’t have to be tousled to look sexy, and this style is proof of that.

It’s about as lengthy as it’s possible to go without straying into wizard territory, while staying just messy enough. In reality, it’s been carefully planned and meticulously styled, but nobody apart from you and your barber has to know that. Those with round faces should add vertical length by picking a style that creates a bit of height, including tied-up or swept back cuts. Avoid styles that are fuller at the sides as this will have the opposite effect. For long, rectangular faces, steer clear of styles in which the hair is brushed up and away from the forehead. All this will do is accentuate the length of the face and make the forehead appear more pronounced.

Textured Pompadour Fade

Finishing with a matte pomade will hold this style in place all day or night. Long hair care routines include frequent washing, conditioning and usage of hydrated products to nourish and moisturize your hair, boosting its natural shine. To prevent men’s hairstyles for long hair from inclination into the feminine side, avoid using too much of styling products. A little bit of light hold gel or pomade can offer better control, while curls often seem sexier in wet looks.

Men’s Long Hair + Undercut Fade

Spend the time to get this right, though, because it’s one of the more statement-making long hairstyles for men. It’s a fact; long hairstyles for men exude confidence while at the same time challenging gender roles. The man bun will highlight chiseled features and is suitable for many different hair types. The good news is, the longer the hair, the better the bun. Elevate the vibe with a fade on the back and sides, or opt for an undercut low fade. Once you have overcome the challenge of how much time it takes to grow long hair, you’ll discover that not all men’s long hairstyles take a lot of effort.

Low Fade with Thick Wavy Hair

A longer length will bring out curls and waves in your hair and using a matte styling cream will help make it look piecey and windblown. A messy hairstyle can look great with all textures and lengths. All you need is the right cut, some pomade or wax, and enough time to tousle your hair and move it into place before walking out the door. Start with a tapered crew cut, then sweep hair up and to the side with some high-hold pomade to keep in in place all day.

Picking A Long Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

“To get rid of that Eighties DeBarge look, rub some Ruffians Matt Clay into the hands and run it through the hair.” This will break up any crunchiness while adding hold. Rub a little serum or hair cream (Ruffians does a very good one) through to give the hair a slight hold. If you’re looking for something slicker, use a matte clay or pomade through the length and ends. “One thing to remember is that afro hair is longer than it appears,” says Mark Maciver, owner of SliderCuts. “It tends to be quite curly which can disguise the true length as it's growing, so you have to be patient.

Fades are a popular style that isn’t going out of fashion any time soon. Although you may see them mostly on short-haired guys, they can also add a fresh, modern twist to men’s long hairstyles. A good fade requires a lot of technical skill, so don’t try to go it alone; leave it to the professionals. If you’re lucky enough to be blessed with naturally blonde locks, a surfer style is a no-brainer. This low-maintenance long hairstyle for men is effortlessly cool.

Long gray hair is a brilliant alternative for older gentlemen that are tired of trimming their hair short for a sophisticated look. If you want to appear younger and vibrant, you can let your hair grow out and match your hairstyle with a dapper closet. This will give you the best of both worlds as your hair won’t be as clean-cut, yet your clothes will make up for the imbalance. Try adding a beard or goatee to ensure you have the confidence required to nail this flattering appearance. Soft-notched bangs are having a moment, and they balance well with long hair.

Again, due to the brushed-back nature of this particular cut, it works best for men with strong hairlines. It’s also worth giving it a wide berth if you frequently find yourself on the receiving end of why-the-long-face jibes. The added length on top will balance things out nicely, especially for those with rounder faces. The slick-back is a neat, old-school style that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity with modern gentleman.

Long straight hair for men can actually be equal to a short hairstyle for women. The short, chic ‘do that women are loving happens to be the long, hipster look that men are equally infatuated with. If you are blessed with naturally tight, perfect curls, your options of good hairstyles are endless.

If you have long hair with side undercuts, you can French braid several sections of your hair, working very close to the scalp. Guys with thick hair will have no problem pulling this one off. Simply wash your hair, dry it with a towel, apply some product and run your fingers through it without combing.

From surfers to hipsters, long hair has always been popular with blonde men. While you don’t need to be blonde to wear your hair longer, it is more striking thanks to the light, bright hue that isn’t available to guys with dark hair. Don’t worry if you’re not a natural blonde since highlights or bleached hair are great color ideas.

Keep the fringe aka bangs long, part your hair, and brush your hair back. Choosing the best hat is more about your style than anything else. This man bun with headband works with hair half or all the way up.

The style requires quite a bit of length on top, particularly in the front, and a longer fade on the sides and back. Some high-shine, high-hold pomade will let you create the height and keep it in place all day. Long hair is incredibly versatile thanks to the dozens of different ways to wear it.

That means that design thinking is not only for designers but also for creative employees, freelancers, and business leaders. It is important to note the five stages of design thinking are not always sequential. They do not have to follow a specific order, and they can often occur in parallel or be repeated iteratively. The stages should be understood as different modes which contribute to the entire design project, rather than sequential steps. This is an experimental phase, and the aim is to identify the best possible solution for each of the problems identified during the first three stages. The solutions are implemented within the prototypes and, one by one, they are investigated and then accepted, improved or rejected based on the users’ experiences.

The End Goal of Design Thinking: Be Desirable, Feasible and Viable

TPS emphasizes continuous improvement, waste reduction, and employee empowerment to create efficient and flexible production processes. By involving employees in problem-solving and encouraging experimentation, TPS has enabled Toyota to innovate and adapt to changing market demands. Indeed, many of the methods and techniques used in design thinking have been borrowed from the designer’s toolkit.

As you walk around the world, you should try to look for the design stories that are all around you. Say to yourself “that’s an example of great design” or “that's an example of really bad design” and try to figure out the reasons why. When the solution was tested, the truck was able to drive free with ease, having suffered only the damage caused by its initial attempt to pass underneath the bridge. The story symbolizes the struggles we face where oftentimes the most obvious solutions are the ones hardest to come by because of the self-imposed constraints we work within. With this in mind, it may be more correct to say design thinking is not about thinking outside the box, but on its edge, its corner, its flap, and under its bar code—as Clint Runge put it. Learn more about design thinking in the full-day course Generating Big Ideas with Design Thinking.

Four Different Types of Personas

Design thinking often includes going back to previous phases to find other solutions or to further iterate or refine your existing solution. Your priority here is to think outside the box and source as many ideas as possible from all areas of the business. Bring in people from different departments so you benefit from a wider range of experiences and perspectives during ideation sessions. Don’t worry about coming up with concrete solutions or how to implement each one — you’ll build on that later. The goal is to explore new and creative ideas rather than come up with an actual plan.

This will mean meeting each week’s course module deadlines and fully answering questions posed therein. This helps ensure participants proceed through the course at a similar pace and can take full advantage of social learning opportunities. In addition to module and assignment completion, we expect you to offer feedback on others’ reflections and contribute to conversations on the platform. Participants who fail to complete the course requirements will not receive a certificate and will not be eligible to retake the course. Design thinking techniques and strategies belong at every level of a business.

The first stage of the design thinking process focuses on user-centric research. You want to gain an empathic understanding of the problem you are trying to solve. Consult experts to find out more about the area of concern and conduct observations to engage and empathize with your users. You may also want to immerse yourself in your users’ physical environment to gain a deeper, personal understanding of the issues involved—as well as their experiences and motivations.

Leverage User Insights and Personalization

Thinking outside of the box can provide an innovative solution to a sticky problem. However, thinking outside of the box can be a real challenge as we naturally develop patterns of thinking that are modeled on the repetitive activities and commonly accessed knowledge we surround ourselves with. It combines investigations into ambiguous elements of the problem with rational and analytical research—the scientific side in other words. This magical concoction reveals previously unknown parameters and helps to uncover alternative strategies which lead to truly innovative solutions. Directly observe what they do, how they think, and what they want, asking yourself things like ‘what motivates or discourages users?

The organization must be able to generate revenues and profits from the solution. The viability lens is essential not only for commercial organizations but also for non-profits.

With the widespread adoption of the double diamond framework, Design Council’s simple visual evolved.

Once a working prototype meets an agreed-upon standard, it is released into the wild. As user feedback is collected, the product is continuously improved to better meet customers’ needs. During ideation, the product team, designers and software engineers brainstorm possible solutions to the problem.

design thinking description

Design thinking is all about finding solutions that respond to human needs and user feedback. People, not technology, are the drivers of innovation, so an essential part of the process involves stepping into the user’s shoes and building genuine empathy for your target audience. As we’ve seen, the Design Thinking process can be applied to all areas of business.

When they visit her house to get her autograph, Addie, who's told the girls that Constance and her dad are old high school friends, not only impulsively asks her to judge their style show, but invites her to dinner. Constance accepts both invitations, but appears ill at ease at dinner and keeps asking for wine. When she finally shows up at the style show, she appears to be drunk. A little disturbed, but undeterred, Addie talks Constance into giving the girls acting lessons; the first turns out fabulously but on the second visit it is very apparent Constance is intoxicated. Disillusioned, Addie wants to abandon Constance, but Grandma insists one cannot abandon friends because they have come upon hard times.

Homestead Cottage - Chatsworth

In the television story, the girls accompanying Addie and Carla Mae to look for Miss Thompson's gift are June and Amy. One of the distinctive touches to House Without a Christmas Tree and all the subsequent Addie Mills' stories was the fade to collage before a commercial break and a collage that dissolved into the opening scene after the break. These evocative collages were done by contemporary artist Norman Sunshine. Sunshine was later honored with an Emmy Award for his collage work in the Addie Mills specials. Miss Peggy Thompson is Addie's schoolteacher for both fifth and sixth grades. She's very attractive, strict but fair, and a good teacher, and the children adore her.

Virginia Robinson Estate and Gardens

Disconcertingly, instead of recasting the Billy character, the entirely new character of Danny Billings was created. Smart, spunky Addie Mills was introduced to television audiences in the Yuletide season of 1972 in the drama The House Without a Christmas Tree. Three subsequent movies followed (although the final "movie" is only an hour long). In fictional Clear River, Nebraska in 1946, 10-year-old Addie Mills is a lonely child who wears large horn-rimmed glasses, living in a plain, ordinary house with her widowed father James and her loving paternal grandmother.

Nixon Birthplace at the Nixon Library and Museum

Uncle Will and his family are mentioned several times in the different stories, but this is the only time we actually see them. We never learn his last name; he may be Addie's mother's brother since James and Grandma are friendly with the family but don't appear to be particularly close and also because he and his wife volunteered to take in Addie after her mother died. Also, Cousin Henry asks Addie why she doesn't ask "your grandmother" to put up the food for her. So Will (or Nora) must be from Helen's side of the family since Grandma is not Henry's grandmother as well. Addie's father is James Mills, a taciturn, thrifty Midwesterner.

The House Without a Christmas Tree was published by Alfred A. Knopf in a hardback edition and subsequently in a paperback Bantam Skylark edition. A condensation of the story appeared in McCall's in 1974. Addie's lively narration makes the book as enthralling as the television story, and adds many delightful details to the story. We learn more about Grandma's eccentricies, which are only touched on in the television story when Addie fights with Jimmy Walsh after he calls Grandma "a character." In the book Grandma wears wildly patched clothing and moccassins. She loves to copy Bible verses onto pieces of paper and leaves them around the house as reminders; she also cuts interesting clippings out of the newspaper and keeps them. We also see more of Carla Mae's home, a happy collection of loving parents, young children, and a "fat Scottie named Minnie," and can understand why Addie loves visiting there.

The Eames House

Billy Wilde (spelled "Wilde" in the television credits but "Wild" in the books) is a schoolmate of Addie's who, she remarks in one story, had been around forever. They've always been in the same grade, played together when they were young, and have maintained a friendly rivalry as they grew older. He and Addie clearly like each other, although Addie professes to "despise" him and only likes his cowboy boots. Oddly, he's more likely to admit he likes her and indeed gives her a heart locket in the school Christmas gift exchange, which embarrasses her a great deal.

Movie Trailer

Addie's mother died from pneumonia a few months after she was born, and her embittered father wonders why his beloved wife had to die rather than their sickly baby. Her first name is taken from her father's middle name, but his only interaction with Addie seems to be in frequent corrections of her. There has never been a Christmas tree in the Mills home since his wife's death, although Addie constantly challenges this omission. This house is most likely recognized from being used in the movie The Big Lebowski. It was built from 1961 to 1963 It was built as a cave-like dwelling that embraces nature.

The first of four specials about the Mills, a family living in Nebraska during the '40s. The story of Addie Mills, a precocious tomboy; her stern, widowed father, James; and her compassionate grandmother. The story depicts Addie's attempts to convince her seemingly cold and unsentimental father that their house needs a Christmas tree for the holidays. The family lives in the Apple family home, a grist mill, with George's father. Franny Michel played the third child and younger daughter, Patricia, who loved books and school just like Addie Mills; she also had an affinity for horses and gets her own, Bronco, in a midseason episode. Unfortunately, Franny left acting after her father's job took him away from Hollywood.

The story was filmed in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, standing in for 1940s Nebraska; the real-life locations included the school and homes of the town. The set decorators and location filming gave the story a delightfully authentic period feel; you truly believe you are in a post-World War II home and community.

I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here. This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors.

Actor Richard Hatch is most well-known for his starring role in the 1970s science-fiction series Battlestar Galactica and his involvement in the new "reboot" series by the same name. Interestingly enough, young actress Patti Cohoon, who has a small part as Addie's classmate Sally, played opposite Franny Michel (Cora Sue) for one year on the series Apple's Way; Patti was Cathy Apple, older sister to Franny's Patricia.

In The Thanksgiving Treasure, Addie is eleven, which tallies with the television timeline. However, in The Easter Promise, taking place a mere six months later, Addie is now twelve, and in Addie and the King of Hearts, almost a year later, she is thirteen. This is a minor bobble; for Addie to be twelve in the spring of 1948, her birthday would have to be somewhere between Christmas and Valentine's Day. But that would have meant she was nearly a year old on her first Christmas, not "a few weeks" or "a few months" old and the gifts Helen made for her would be inappropriate for a child who would possibly be walking by then.

The children in Addie's class are even shown beginning the school day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag without the 1956 "under God" addition, as it would have been then. The only thing that looks a bit "off" are Lisa Lucas' modern-style glasses, which are assumed to be her own, or else they would have used something styled more to the time. They so appropriately frame her face, however, that it is difficult to imagine Addie without those particular glasses. Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available.

How to Design a Character: The Creator's Guide to Amazing Characters

character design template

This will end up distracting the audience rather than engaging them. When creating a distinct character silhouette, it’s important to have a solid understanding of shape language. Take a look at the video below to learn more about the language of shapes and how they contribute to great character design. They are given personalities and details that make them iconic and serve as the vehicle of a story. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the purpose of character design, what makes a character design so great, and what the process of designing a character entails. Illustrator Julio Robledo explains how to create a model sheet for a character design.

How to draw a mouth and lips

Discover hundreds of portfolios and illustrations from your favourite artists. An effective way to achieve this is to tweak your proportions until something feels slightly off. Doing so could also inject a bit of humor or flair into your design, which is never a bad thing, creating that unique silhouette we talked about earlier. 🦄 Good character design is reliant on quickly communicating a message, but that also makes it easy to revert to cliches and stereotypes. No matter what you do, focusing on a few details is better than trying to do it all at once. This makes it easier for the audience to decode your message and enjoy the storytelling.

There are a number of brainstorming techniques that can help you develop your character profile. The reason being that singular words keep ideas simple, distilling them to their essence, and this comes in handy when you need to communicate those traits visually. Creating a thumbnail is the first time a character designer starts to put their ideas onto paper (physical or digital).

Psychological traits are those that aren’t readily apparent to an onlooker but are critical to how your character operates in any given situation. This is where you start getting deep with things like flaws, desires, and traits that make people (or non-people) who they are. More importantly, it allows you to understand how that past affects their actions in your story. Some of this information might never see the light of day, but it allows you to craft dynamic, complex characters. Physical appearance is what someone would notice about your character if they looked at them.

Some of the most memorable characters in television and film come from the world of 2D and 3D animation. Before these characters are even animated, however, they are designed. The purpose of the construction sheet is to specify the general proportions of the character, and the instructions for other artists to build it. Are you looking for the art of a specific illustrator, mangaka, or animator?

Names and additional details can be revealed if the character is going to be important to the story in any way. Whether healthy, dysfunctional, or somewhere in between, a character’s family is instrumental in their development and can define their personality. This section will dive deeper into your character’s psyche.

Pay attention to overall shapes and silhouettes

A character profile is like a detailed map of your character’s life. It’s made up of different sections with questions about your character’s development. Some questions are simple, while others make you think deeply. When you finish filling it out, you’ll know everything about your character. Character growth is the most important category in this template. Here is where you include things like arcs, archetypes, conflicts, goals, and motivation.

Convert to grayscale to check color value and balance

Using colors this way can help you tell a story effectively by honing in on a particular characteristic and highlighting it. This signals to the reader what type of character they’re seeing and how they’re supposed to feel about them. If you apply all of these tricks to your silhouette(s), it’s time to start thinking about how to add color back in. If you’re designing more than one character for a project, you want them to be both different from each other so that you can tell them apart, and consistent enough that they make sense together. This is primarily achieved by maintaining the same style for the whole cast, but that’s easier said than done.

Maybe ask them before building a character and filling out the character development sheet. But by answering specific, targeted character development questions, you’ll cover everything – even the things you wouldn’t have thought of yourself. One option instead is to suggest a distant, out-of-focus background with roughly painted shapes behind the character. But most artists opt for a fairly simple background, often in a neutral greyish tone with a subtle color gradient or texture.

With the Character AI Template, you have the freedom to explore a multitude of character Traits and Attributes. The template will help in customizing your character to your specific needs. Whether you’re looking to create a brave hero, a cunning villain, a quirky sidekick, or a fantasy GF/BF. Since 2013, Character Design References has supported and inspired a new generation of artists. We share only the finest artworks, the best tutorials and the greatest animated shorts with an international community of over 1 million artists, art enthusiasts and animation fans.

If you’ve used the tips and tricks in this article and applied some of your own unique flavor to your character, it’s time to ask for feedback before it’ll be ready to be published. Lastly, no matter how carefully you choose the colors for your character design, remember to always check it against the background(s) your characters will be placed on. All your work will be in vain if it clashes or blends too well with the background. Colors that are similar to each other start to blend together, and sometimes it can make the different parts of your character design less distinct.

The House Without a Christmas Tree 1972 Holiday TV Movie Database

Addie calls her "my worst friend in fifth grade." In the books it is emphasized that she likes ballet, but she talks about getting the lead role in a tap dancing exhibition in The Thanksgiving Treasure. The books also reveal that her father owns the gravel pit where James Mills works. Addie finally wins her class Christmas tree in a supervised contest between Gloria Cott and herself by using a guessing technique learned from her father. When she brings the prize home, both she and her grandmother are delighted at the prospect of their first Christmas with a tree. James angrily orders the tree removed; he even accuses Addie of cheating Gloria to win it.

Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963. The Research House was rebuilt with the most modern materials and design adaptations by Neutra and his son Dion in 1966. There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona.

Addie resembles Helen so much that sometimes it is hard for him to have her around and he seems occasionally baffled by her quicksilver personality. He operates a crane at the gravel pit for a living and insists Addie do well in school because he never finished high school. He and Helen married in 1926, when she was eighteen and he was about 28. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight.

Art Direction

Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA. The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can.

It would be nice to dream about them being run through an editing unit like an AVID machine, which was used to make the AMC series Remember WENN look as if it were filmed on old Technicolor stock from the 1940s. That would give them a "period" look that would be just perfect. The character of Addie Mills was based on the real-life experiences of Gail Rock, who grew up in a similar family environment in Valley, Nebraska, the real-life counterpart to the story setting of Clear River. Her original story and the subsequent Thanksgiving tale were adapted to the screen by Eleanor Perry, and Gail Rock and Alan Shayne did the remainder.

He also designed one of my favorite places in LA, the Wayfarers Chapel. The Derby House was built for businessman James Derby, though due to a separation with his wife he would never live here. The textile blocks are supposed to help keep the interior bright. From the photos that I have seen online the inside looks really interesting.

The distinctive piano theme was composed by Arthur Rubenstein and the stories were directed by Paul Bogart (Joseph Hardy directed Addie and the King of Hearts) and produced by Alan Shayne. The Chateau style home was built in 1909 by Rollin B. Lane. Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955. In 1963 the home became The Magic Castle, home to the Academy of Magical Arts. If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so. About last night…thanks to @yielddesignco for inviting us into the sowden house and introducing us to your black dahlia cbd candle.

In the meantime she is coping with the news that her dad has been seeing brassy, bottle-blonde Irene Davis, widowed owner of the town beauty salon. Addie is appalled...but it's not the end of the surprises before the annual Valentines Day dance is over. When CBS released this story to video it was renamed The Holiday Treasure so it could be sold with the Christmas tapes. Many videotape catalogs and web sites list this story's title as being A House Without a Christmas Tree and some videotapes clearly have that title on them. However, The House Without A Christmas Tree is the definitive title of both the special and the novel. Tanya Smithers is another classmate, a rather snooty one at that.

The Banning Museum

When we meet her, Adelaide Mills is a bright, lively precocious ten year old, born in 1936. She wears glasses, loves school and is a straight A student like her late mother, who was valedictorian of her high school class and won a silver cup when she graduated. She loves boyish games and especially horses (her favorite movie star is Roy Rogers, but she most often has her eye on his palomino stallion, Trigger), but Addie's favorite activities are painting and drawing. She plans to become an artist when she grows up and study in Paris.

He could have been portrayed as a soulless tyrant, but comes across as a deeply grieving man instead. The Christmas show was so successful,[2] it resulted in three other specials with the same cast, all likewise based on books that Gail Rock had written. The House Without a Christmas Tree was filmed in Uxbridge, Ontario, mainly at the corner of Peel Street and Victoria Drive, where the house and school still exist. They also shot near the downtown core at Church and Brock Street West.

Given the timeline presented by The House Without a Christmas Tree novel, he is about 48 years old. Addie thinks he is handsome, which he is, in a rather bleak way. James was always a proud, serious man, but in the past ten years since his wife Helen died, he has been withdrawn and overly strict with his only child.

The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page. The Ennis House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924. The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks. The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard. You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner.

So Addie probably was born some time in the fall and the age change was presumably made to make Addie older to fit the more mature themes of the final two specials. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio.

How to Create the Ultimate Character Profile + Template

At the very end, I’ve also added additional tools and resources you can use to craft your characters, no matter where you are in your writing journey. Whether you want help with something specific in mind or want to explore your characters from different angles and perspectives, you can find a lot of great content, exercises, and tools below. Creating characters that leap off the pages and come alive in the reader’s imagination is important. I have, therefore, compiled this ultimate guide to character creation to make it as easy as possible for you to find the help you need. In this section, I’ll go through some highlights that make a good formula for a memorable character. Most of the things we’ve already discussed in some of the steps.

Draw inspiration from life

Sometimes it’s hard to start with the general description, especially if you start from scratch. You can always finish with the physical and personality traits first and go back to finish the overview. So why did I even start writing this article on how to design a character, you might ask.

Step #2: The Character’s Inner Circle

I hope this guide inspired you to give life to your character ideas and make them absolutely awesome. It all comes down to how you want your character to progress. Some fields here are optional, but it is a great starting point in creating your character sheet template. The important thing is that it helps you flesh out your character and turn them into a real person that both you and your readers will understand.

How to design comic characters

Ultimately, making sure that the client is happy with your work is important, so trust and good communication is key. As far as details go, facial features are often a great way to get a point across and communicate emotions, but also tricky to get right. A frown, a goofy smile, or an evil grin have vastly different effects, and can elevate your design to new heights, when applied appropriately. If you have multiple characters, playing around with the proportions is important because it helps you create a more dynamic cast of characters. If they all follow a predictable pattern — some sort of Golden Ratio — they start to blend in to each other and the aggregated effect becomes stale and uninspiring. With all that said, let’s take a moment to acknowledge that color theory is complex and that there are no hard and fast rules.

If you are designing a character for an animator, you will also need to create a handful of orthographic T-pose sketches. These display a front, back, and side view of the character standing with their legs together and arms outstretched, and they give the animator a neutral view of the design on which to animate. T-poses can also be useful for figuring out clothing detail that may get lost in a more expressive pose. The character concept is a lot like the destination your ship is steering towards, and for that reason, you should pay particular attention to this step. Unfortunately, there’s not always a straightforward way to know whether you’ve chosen the right destination.

Getting Started with the Character AI Template

Your character will have a set of general goals, ambitions, and desires in life. But, this particular story is going to be about one of them. You’ll want to go over grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. Again, determine the ages and their relationship with your main character.

Doing so will allow you to clear your mind and come back to your thumbnails with a fresh perspective. When you are ready to get back to work, find the thumbnail that evokes your concept most effectively. You are then going to create a larger, more detailed sketch that will serve as the basis for your final artwork. But while the client’s preference determines the format of your final design deliverable, you can use any tool you like before you get to that point. For example, many of the character artists we interviewed prefer doing preliminary sketches on paper.

These days, most clients will be expecting some sort of digital file for easy storage and sharing, usually an original source file from a program like Photoshop and a simple image type such as JPEG. Get the concept as fleshed out as you can, and come back to this step later if necessary. When something in your design just doesn’t feel right, the underlying concept is usually the first place you should look.

character design template

That, of course, is not to say that you should pay less attention to the render. In order for your character concept to land, it has to be truly presentable. In addition, you may notice details that you need to change the more realistic your design becomes. The last thing you want is a character that is full of countless colors with no hierarchy or intentional use of palette.

The colors you choose can further enhance the intended mood of the character. Adding a floor shadow as well is a simple way to ground your character in space and reinforce the lighting. Your main concern at this stage should be the pose, so take the time to sketch a few options that show off the character’s personality.

Silhouette, palette, and exaggeration are three fundamental components of good character design. While there are plenty of details a character designer must consider, these three elements are often at the core of what makes a character design memorable or completely forgettable. The following list is an additional directory of articles, blogs, podcasts, and other useful resources for artists, which you can use as a compendium for our visual library. Norwegian Cruise Line Kicks off European Season With New Options

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want, on which ship, on which itinerary — and about a dozen other things — you can head over to ncl.com to make a booking directly. Reaching the second tier, Silver (20 points), would take at the most three cruises if you're doing seven-night trips. Norwegian has a point-based frequent cruiser program, Latitudes Rewards, that has seven tiers, ranging from Bronze (requiring 1 point) to Ambassador (700 points). The line just recommends a step up to "smart casual" outfits in its more formal dining rooms and upscale specialty restaurants.

NCL Cruise Ships By Size

There are plenty of activities available or relax at one of their shows. NCL offers Freestyle Dining, which means that you can opt to eat whenever you wish - no fixed time. Over the next decade this will not only give NCLH the biggest growth story within the cruise industry but will also allow them to continue entering new markets with minimal cannibalization to their fleet, the analyst noted. The first NCL ship that was built specifically for NCLs (versus being built for another cruise line before being transferred over to NCL) was Norwegian Jewel.

Norwegian Viva

Experience the sublime colorful architecture of these breezy, tropical ports. Additionally, three more ships in this Prima Class series are on order for delivery in 2026, 2027 and 2028, respectively. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March. British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary. Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

Norwegian Sun

Aurora borealis in the sky seen from a cruise ship in Arctic Norway. One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

Norwegian Cruise Line ships are categorized into Breakaway Plus Class, Jewel Class, Prima Class, Dawn Class, Sun Class, and Breakaway Class. From unique hull-art that stand out at sea to new innovations onboard, Norwegian Cruise Line has never been afraid to try something new. These are the Norwegian ships you go on if you're a fan of megaresorts.

An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only. Norwegian Joy debuts in Port Canaveral FL as she departs on a 14-day trip from Orlando to Los Angeles CA on December 4. During the voyage, she also calls at San Juan Del Sur for the first time and visits Cartagena, Puerto Caldera (Puntarenas), Puerto Quetzal, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas.

The ship is transitioning from the Caribbean with a cruise ending in New York City on April 29. It will then make a transatlantic crossing to Southampton, arriving on May 13. With a few calls in northern Europe until June, Norwegian Getaway will make its way to the Med on June 6, sailing to Barcelona.

The new class will build upon the brand’s legacy of freedom and flexibility found across its fleet and feature a host of cutting-edge designs that will further elevate its already award-winning guest experience. Refurbished in 2018, she has plenty to keep you occupied, day and night. From 17 different restaurants to opulent theatre productions, hot tubs to a spacious spa, casino to sports court, there are endless options from which to choose.

Great Stirrup Cay was last enhanced in 2014 and by 2017 spring and now provides several new offerings and amenities (for details see the island's review above). As one of the newer NCL ships, Norwegian Escape was designed to help you escape from the everyday and be immersed in the "on-board" experience. Indulge in Latin-inspired cuisine at Bayamo seafood restaurant or share delicious food with friends and family at Pinchos Tapas Bar, both of these eateries brought to you by Iron Chef Jose Garces. Built partially in Mississippi and partially in Germany, Pride of America was part of a NCL effort to build and flag several cruise ships within the United States. The ship will feature more than 43,000 square feet of outdoor space, more than one infinity pool and a cool dining concept called the Indulge Food Hall, which encompasses nearly a dozen restaurants all in one dining experience. If you’re looking for the biggest ships with the most staterooms, entertainment spaces and dining, then you might not necessarily want to go for one of Norwegian’s brand-new ships.

We hope you enjoy our comprehensive list of Norwegian cruise ships by age, from newest to oldest. Norwegian Viva took her maiden voyage in August of 2023 and is the second Prima-class ship with NCL. There are currently 8 classes of Norwegian cruise ships, although 3 of them only have one ship in them. Dating to 2001 and 1999, respectively, Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Sky are among the smallest ships at Norwegian. They offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels. The Dawn-class ships are similar to the Jewel-class ships in size and amenities, with a few differences.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s third Prima-class ship will be named Norwegian Aqua, and she is sure to make a splash. Sister ship to the already immensely popular Norwegian Prima (2022) and Norwegian Viva (2023), the third-in-class vessel has further updates and innovations that will truly set her apart. Norwegian Cruise Line has released a teaser video about the third ship in the innovative Prima class of vessels with a confirmed name of the new vessel – Norwegian Aqua. With outstanding innovations of her own, the new ship is sure to make waves when she debuts in 2025. In December 2016, NCLH (shipowner) received permission to operate cruises to Cuba, beginning March 2017.

Unveiled in 1998, it's not just the oldest Norwegian Cruise Line ship but the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship — far smaller than the newest Norwegian vessels. At 75,904 tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of the recently unveiled Norwegian Encore, and it carries just 1,966 passengers — about 2,000 fewer than the Norwegian biggies. Other relatively new Norwegian Cruise Line ships include Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy. Right now, the newest Norwegian cruise ship is Norwegian Viva, which debuted in August. It's the second ship in Norwegian's new Prima Class of vessels, which began debuting in 2022 with the arrival of Norwegian Prima. Following the Breakaway Plus Class, the most innovative and successful class in the Company’s history, Norwegian Cruise Line announced in 2017 the next generation class of ships with Prima Class.

Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Third Prima-Class Ship

norwegian cruise ship names

Each class of ship has a unique architectural design layout and features. Most ships in a particular class have an almost identical layout with some minor changes. She is 80,439 GRTs and carries 2,186 passengers (based on two per cabin). The initial construction of the vessel began in 2000 in the United States as part of a plan for a US-built and US-flagged cruise ship under Project America. Still, the project failed, and she was eventually purchased by Norwegian Cruise Lines and completed in Germany.

Cabins and suites

You'll also find multiple pools on each of the ships, whirlpools, basketball courts and golf driving nets. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino, and multiple bars and lounges. You'll also find multiple pools on each of the ships, along with whirlpools, basketball courts and golf driving nets. In addition, Norwegian Epic has the line's biggest solo cabin complex (with 128 rooms for one) and a giant The Haven private suite complex. Note that the last four ships in the Prima-class series, due to debut between 2025 and 2027, are being redesigned to be bigger than the first two ships in the series. Only two ships in the series (Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima) are currently in operation.

New, Bigger Than Ever Staterooms

Norwegian's older ships, in many cases, are about half the size of the line's newer ships and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Breakaway Plus Class ships can hold around 4,000 passengers, based on double occupancy, the line's oldest vessels are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

What's the difference between newer and older Norwegian Cruise Line ships?

Each of these groups — known as "classes" in cruise industry lingo — is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time in the same basic design. Some cruise lines — Viking, for instance — have fleets where many of the ships have the same basic design. Starlink provides fast Internet service at sea and is now available on Norwegian Sky. Using advanced low earth orbit satellites, SpaceX’s Starlink delivers industry leading broadband internet connectivity, which will improve the capacity, speed, and reliability of Internet on board. They also mark a more upscale turn for the line, with more space per passenger than earlier Norwegian ships and lots of suites. On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian's four relatively new Breakaway Plus-class vessels — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line's premier offerings. While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant, Oasis-class ships, they are firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants.

Norwegian Cruise Line currently has four new cruise ships on order. Norwegian's newest ships are generally far bigger and much more amenity-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of activities on a Norwegian cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last 12 or so years. When Norwegian Escape debuted, it featured the largest water park in the entire NCL fleet. While the cruise line is not necessarily historically known for its mega-ships, like Royal Caribbean might be these days, several Norwegian cruise ships are still ranked among the 30 largest in the world. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

The Prima Class is NCL’s newest class of ships, intended to debut between 2022 and 2027. The class will include six ships and start with the namesake ship, Norwegian Prima. While the Prima-class vessels aren’t aiming to be the biggest on the ocean today, they do offer a range of innovative special features that frequent cruisers will like.

You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Norwegian's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand. That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise (there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process — trust us) we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. A passenger staying in suites and booking through Latitudes Rewards Insider Offers could get to the Platinum level with just four seven-night cruises. Lower tiers don't bring all that much in terms of truly valuable benefits. You'll get things like priority check-in and discounted spa treatments performed while ships are in port. Norwegian also offers dedicated teen zones and programming on ships for children ages 13 to 17.
